This was the game we all could have hoped for, a physical and heated rivalry game that goes to a shootout.
There was a crowd of fans lined to the street waiting for the doors to open, and when they got in and became a standing room only crowd, they got LOUD. The UK pep band was there as well, adding a whole new and exciting element to already the best home ice crowd in college hockey.
The first got off to a fast a physical pace that would carry through the entire game. It set a tone that this was a rivalry game and it wasn’t going to be pretty. Though physical and having a lot of action, the first would end with no score.
The second would keep up the pace but see both teams break through and score. The Cats would get two goals from Captain Jimmy Kasch and one from Ryan Duffy. Louisville would score twice as well. The period would end in a 3-2 lead for UK.
Louisville would score early on a power play in the third to tie the game. From then on it was just a physical slugfest. Both sides getting hit after hit and just playing a great game between two great teams. The third would end in a 3-3 tie and go to a five minute overtime.
In the overtime period both teams played hard, but you could see the effects of this great game setting in as during breaks in play both teams just looked exhausted. Eric Williams would make some great saves to keep the game knotted at three after the end of the overtime period.
The game them went to the most exciting thing in hockey, a shootout. Williams would stop the first Cards shooter. Kasch would then score on UK’s first attempt. Williams would stop U of L on their second attempt with a great kick save. Both teams traded stops then in Louisville’s last attempt, Williams stood tall once again and kept the Cards shooter out for the UK win!
This, along with the Georgia win last season, are those wins you gauge were the program is at. Louisville is one of the top teams in the ACHA southeast division over the past few years, winners of 86 games the past three seasons. This is a win that not only shows you can play with the top teams, but beat them.
It’s Cats and Cards round two tonight in Louisville. Another big game early in the season. The Cats will look for the sweep and to keep momentum building.
***The ACHA has ruled this game ended in a 3-3 tie this morning. So the Cats are 4-0-1 on the year instead of 5-0***
