UK Sweeps Akron in Season Opening Series

Last night at the Lexington Ice Center, the University of Kentucky Hockey Club shutout the Akron Zips 8-0, to sweep the series and start the season 2-0. They also outscored Akron 16-1 in the two games.

Kentucky came out fast and physical like they did the night before. Akron, nursing some injuries from the previous night’s game, just didn’t have anything for the swarm the Cats unleashed on them.

The first the Wildcats got three goals. The first was by Matt Pakkala off a Griffin Stulman assist. Gary Eastlack would knock in the second goal with Jake Deemer picking up the assist. The third UK goal of the period went to Max Proctor, Mikey Liszka on the assist. The Cats set the tone early and never let off the gas.

The second was all UK. While both teams had a player in the penalty box, Jake Patneau got things going with a goal and Pakkala picking up the assist and giving UK a 4-0 lead. Ryan Duffy scored the Cats 5th goal of the night off assists from Zach Bartuce and Deemer. Kentucky’s 6th goal would come when Gary Eastlack stole the puck and took it in for the score. Max Boss would snipe in the 7th goal off a Ryan Huesman assist.

The third would see Akron bringing in a new goalie. He held strong, but UK still got a goal in the third. Jake Deemer would score off a Max Boss assist.

Eric Williams started in net for the Cats and got his first career ACHA shutout. He played a great game and we here at UK Hockey Report want to send our congratulations out to him for this achievement. Between his and Jeff Ison’s play this weekend, UK has to feel really well about their goalies moving forward in the year.

Kentucky will play the next two games on the road in Knoxville against the Volunteers. The games are Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th. If you are in the Knoxville area go be loud and support the team on the road. The next home game will be Friday the 21st. So it’s back to back rivalry weekends for the Cats. The Barn needs to be rocking that game, so be loud and proud!
